AUCKLAND, 24th February. A ten«roomod liou»6 in St. George's Bay-road, Parneli, was gutted by fire at 10 o'clock to-night. The houso was occupied by Mrs. T. J. Hanna, and was owned by her two sons, Mesßiß. Philyr and Norman Hanna. Tho house was
insured for £600 with tho New Zealand Insurance Company, and the furniture, including tho piano (insured for £165), was insured foi about £600 in the same office. TOIAR.U, 24th February. Since Friday night 3^in of vain have fallen here. The weather is still showery and cold, and detrimental to tho late harvest. The annual valuation of the borough (annual value sjstem) is now completed. The total stands at £150,199, an increase of £11.899 on last year. INVERCARGILL, 24th Feb. A meeting of subscriber^ to the local Athenaeum this evening rejected a proposal to hand the institution over to tho Town Council, with a view of making it a free public reading-room, and ultimately a. free library. The council had previously declined to undertake that the library would be free, as the rales would hive had to contribute from £300 to £800 per annum for its maintenance. 1
