A GOOD "220" SWIMMING CARNIVAL

HEALY JUST WINS THE CHAMPIONSHIP. CLYDE-QUAY SCHOOL RETAINS I DUTHIE CUP. The conditions for swimming on Saturday afternoon were neither ideal imr unpleasant. There wad a eoutherly breeze,* which made the air chilly, but the water was comparatively warm. Nevertheless, the Wellington Club's Carnival wos not a huge success, although there were some interesting races. The overcast sky evidently kept many people away, for there w»b only a fair attendance of the public. Thecommitt&c, which had worked very hard, deserved a better reward, and it was further hampered by the fact that a greater number of the officials. appointed to manage the carnival failed to put in an appearance. Consequently all the work tell on a willing few, If the carnival dragged at all they must not be blamed. The committee wae further disappointed in the fact that C. Weleon, the Auckland crack, who was runheiMtp to Champion in. all the events, was unable to appear. He wae here on Saturday morning, but later received a telegram asking him to return North immediately. Consequently, he was unable to' fulfil hk engagements. . The "star" event on the programme was the 220 yds Wellington Provincial Championship. Arrangements were made previously lo provide standard certificates—the standard being , set at smin— -and this no doubt induced, a greater number of starters than- wotild probably have been the case other wise. The following swimmers faced, ih© starter :— R. Healy (holder), B. C. Freyberg (late of vVellingtoli and now of Levin), B. O'Neill, R. M. Newman. aiid < H. Capper. An excellent start was effected, Freyberg coming up well ahead of the remaining competitors. The fivo Kept level over the first 50, swum at a Bteady pace.;- but, coming to the 100 turn, Healy and Freyburg pulled away. Heajy was the first to touch tho board, but Freyberg recovered lost ground by a beautiful turn. Capper, who swallowed an overdose of salt water, had to come ashore at this ;point, while Newman, led .O'Neill by three or four yards. All .interest settled on Healy and Freybefg, who were ' swimming dead level. At, J. 50 they turned together, and ra_ced to ,tjie 200 mark, with Healy having just a slight advantage. They came up from the .turn together, and it was not until ten yards from home that Healy managed to shake off Freyberg. As it was, he ,did it just in time, and won by a bare yard. His time was 2min 44 l-sssc —which is undoubtedly a good swim. Freyjberg was "clocked at 2thin 45sec. O'Neill "and Newman were left to fight for,' t third position, and the former had littrc> difficulty in securing the honour. Hifi.time, as far as can be ascertained, was not taken, but it is probable he got within the standard. EVery year the competition among teanis representing the various schools for the possession of the Duthie Cup creates keen interest. This cup, which was ' presented about nine or ten years ago,' lias done more to encourage swimming in the schools than perhaps anything else. The event takes the form of "a 200 yds championship .relay race for teams of four. The Clyde-quay School holds the unique record of having won the "race every year since its inauguration—a record which they ate justly provid of. This year's race was decided ! on .Saturday, and attracted five teams fidar the following schools :--Clydequayj Marist Bros., Terrace, South Wel» linglbn, and Newtown. Clyde-quay won by "about three yards, after a most exciting race. The teams did not lack encouragemeht from their schoolfellows, who worked themselves up into great ! excitement, and urged the swimmers to dot their best. | In the handicap events, the handicapping out « by Mr. W. S. Morpeth) was a feature. There were some very close finishes. The Ladies' Bracelet was won by V. L. Allen, who thus scored his first success for two years. He has lieen a very consistent starter at all the carnivals and club races, but at the finishes was anywhere but in front. His win, therefore, waß well-deserved, and, moreover, very popular. Neal, Wellington's breast-stroke representative at Wanganui, was first in the 50yds dash, after an excellent race with H. K. Johhston and L. D. Bamfield, who filled the respective places. L. C. Armstrong, of Wangarfii, did the best time for the fifty^-SOsec. There were i thirteen starters in the 440 yds handicap, which was secured by K. Russell, witn W. G. Morpeth^econd, and J. A. Smith third. The time was 7min 10 4-secs The remainder of the programme was made up of an exhibition water-polo match, diving and various novelty and comedy events. His efforts to brighten the carnival were not wholly unsuccessful.
