ORIENTAL BAY ESPLANADE

TO SBC CDITOB. Sirj-^I think I may safely, affirm that I am but echoing the sentiments of the ■whole of the residents of Roeeneath and Oriental Bay when I express my great gratification, at the tenor of the City Engineer's recent report anent the above work. The City Council approved that report, and we trust an early start will be madfe with the work, and that it will be carried through to completion. On further consideration, however, I hope both the engineer and the council will recognise the advisablehess of so far amending the report as to enable the properly-formed esplanade to be constructed right Tound to the Roseneath tram terminus. The extra work will be comparatively slight, as there ie already a sea-wall runniag from the' eastern horn of the bay as far as the Town Belt boundary of the quarry. From its present termination to the tram terminus is only some four or five chains; the road all along there is very wide, and the incidental filling-in would be trifling with the material just at hand. On the old kerosene store site, close to the trani terminus, and at the foot of the hill tc Roßeneath, there has jast been erected, at the cost of some £10,000 to £11,000, an up-to-date tea kiosk and hall, which must greatly add in the future_ to the attractiveness of the bay. It will most certainly in the summer months, and in winter in fine weather, increase the tramway revenue on the bay section three oi four fold. In addition to this,' I understand the owners of the quarry intend laying out the ground adjacent .to the kiosk with plants, shrubs, paths, etc., duly fenced, and provided with seats foi the public. Surely the City Council will see the value of 6iich an asset as this tc the city, and the boon it will be to the citizens because of its nearness to the city. If the council recognises this, then, I think it will also see the necessity oi the esplandade- extending as far as thie locality, so that everything seaward may be in keeping with the order and beauty inland. Perhaps the Mayor and coun.' cillors will come round and picture the scene for themselves!—- 1 din, etc., RESIDENT. .Wellington, 21st February, 1913.
