MASTERTON MATTERS
(BT TELEGRAPH— SPKCIAt TO TIM POST.) MASTERTON, 24th January. ' The weather was fine, but extremely hot, to-day. The rain which fell on Wednesday did the surrounding country a great amount of good, but much more is needed, as the land was in a Very parched- state. At the Wairarapa Championship Tehnis TourhMnent, which opened on Wednesday, some fine tennis was witnessed, several of the matches rousing the spectators to enthusiasm. 1 The_ semi-final in the men's championship singles was won by Pearse (Hastings), who defeated R. W. RoydhoußO (Carterton), 6—l, 6—o. In the semi-final in the men's championship doubles, W. Pearse and A. T. Spain beat R W Roydhouse and T. Maunsell, 6— +/ 4--6, 10—8. This match was the feature of tho tournament, sortie excellent tennis being displayed. The game lasted ninety minutes, and was splendidly contested. In the ladies' championship doubles Miss Wellwood and M'Beth (Hastings) defeated Mrs. Hultne (Blenheim) and Miss Stone (Maeterton), 9-4.
