SWEPT OVER A WEIR

Two workmen met with an extraordinary accident on the Thames, near Boulter's Lock, on 11th ult., and as a result one was drowned and the second had a very narrow escape. The men, who were, employed by the Thames Conservancy, wefe in a dinghy towinff a pile up the millstream, when one of the oars snapped. The stream was so strong that it was impossible with one oar to manage the boat, which was being swept towards the weir. One of the men, Thomas Bushnell, jumped overboard to try and swim to safety. The other man, Thomas Garrett, saved hiirtseJf by catching hold of the weir tackle, but Bushnell, who hadß\vum back to the boat, was hurled with the boat over the weir. Garrett and a man on the bank made every effort to save him,. and a lifebuoy Was thrown him, but he was too exhausted to seize it, and .was drowned.
