ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES (sr ratEGßAPS— pussg association.) STRANGE CAUSE OF A FATALIST, GISBORNE, 23rd January. A peculiar and distressing fatality was reported from Whatautu to-day. The infant child of Mr. W. SKde. carpenter, swallowed a screw; and all efforts to dislodge it failing, the little one died a couple of hours later. YOUNG WOMEN'S* ffARSOW~"~ ESCAPE. I WANGANUI, 23rd January. A narrow escape from a drowning accident occurred on the Castlech'ff beach early this afternoon. A party of young women and children were bathing close to the wrecked Pelotas, when one of them who could not swim was carried out by the strong current. Her predicament was noticed by a Mr. Jamieson, from Hunterville, one of the few frequenters of the beach at that hour, who gallantly plunged into the breakers fully dressed and brought the much-exhausted young lady to a place of safety. FATAL FALL. AUCKLAND, This Day. George Henry Allport fell from a load of chaff at M&ngere and fractured his skull. He died ab the hospital this morning. A young man named L. Robinson was using a methylated spirit stove yesterday, when a bottle of spirits overturned and the contents were ignited. Mr. Robinson, who is a resident of Lyall Bay, was brought into the hospital suffering from burns on the legs, groin, and left hand. Although severe, the injuries are not in any way dangerous, The strenuous life of to-day renders accident and sickness insurance no longer a luxury, but a necessity.
