RACING AT TRENTHAM

WELLINGTON STAKES DAY FAVOURITES AGAIN FAIR BADLY „ (By Sir Bedivere.) The second day's card was run through under ideal conditions, as the sun shone out brightly throughout the afternoon and there was an entire absence of wind. His Excellency the Governor arrived after the first event had been decided, and by the time the last of the special trains had reached the course the 'attendance, for an off day, was a record one. As on Cup day, the racing was of a, high-class character, and winners were hard to find. F. E. Jones, who recently relinquished the position, of first horseman to the 'Chokebore Lodge stable, was in great' form, and equalled Berry's -record by getting his mount home ' first in no less than four of the eight events. Tho' racing was again of the cleanest description, and the only matter that called for the attention of the stipendiary steward was an alleged cross soon after the start for -the Douru Cup; J. Olsen, the rider of Mosgiel, being called upon for an explanation and severely cautioned. That we saw a right good colt, there can be no two opinions, and 'it is regrettable that there should be no prospect of the Wellington Stakes winner, Mowbray, meeting Soltano. Each of these colts is a cut far above the ordinary, and it is at present a moot point as to which is the better. Nor is this question likely to be decided this sea«foii, as, if Soltano remains in> the Dominion this autumn, he will contest the Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie, i whereas Mowbray is certain to be at Riccarton. Cup form worked out wonderfully correctly in the Wellington Handicap, except that Master Laddo was for once in a generous mood. A* on the. opening day, the train arrangements were infinitely better than, has been customary, and there . wle little, if any,- cause for complaint under this head. Speculation was again brisk, the sum of £25,065 being handled at the totalisator, a decrease of £10,026 on the figures for the second day of the meeting last year. Additional results : FITZHERBERT HANDICAP, of 200 soys., for two-year-olds that have not won a race of the value of 200 soys or upwards at the time of starting. Five -furlongs. 4 Sir George Clifford's b f Briar Patchi by Treadmill— Bonnie Brae, 6.10, carried 6.11 (0. Cutts.) Immer set out at a great pace and led into the straight from Briar Patch. The latter asserted herself inside the distance, and quickly butting down the favourite, Won easily by a bare length. Adelici* was two lengths away third. Time, lmia 2 2-ssec. DOVRO CUP HANDICAP, of 250 boys. Hack conditions. Six furlongs. 5' Murray Hobbs's br f Peg, by Charlemagne ll.— 'Cora Lynn, j 3yrs, 9.1 (F. (Winner trained by owner.) j When- they settled down Mosgiel, Portland Lady, Peg, and Heather were at the head of affairs. Mosgiel soon lost' his place, and Glenfinnan then moved up and led round the turn from Portland Lady, Peg, Amber and White, Heather,, and Grattan. At the home bend Amber and White ran up second, but once the, straight was entered she, Portland Lady, and Heather were in difficulties, and Peg went On to win easily by three-quarters of a length. Gerbera, who finished well, was a length away third, and the next j to finish were Portland Lady and Oxen- j hope. Time, lmin 16Sec. i DISPOSAL STAKES, of 100 aova. For | three-year-olds and upwards. Special i weights. Five furlongs. 3 M. Hobbs's b h Crosbie, by Lupin (imp.)— Vanguard mare, Syrs, 8.8 , \ * • (F. E. Jones) 1 2 H. Naumai and Full Rate gave all sorts of trouble at the post, and tho latter was left badly, Mr. O'Connor's action in declining to wait longer for him being generally commended. Naumai began with hia old-time brilliancy, but he tired during the last furlong, and Crosbie, who had always been lying Becoiid, got up $n the last stride and beat him by half a head. Medallist was a neck away third, just ahead of Indra and Over Rate. Time, lmjn 3sec. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP, of 300 ' Hoys. Six furlongs. 3 W. Nidd's b f Peroneal, by Achilles —Prelude, 3yrs, 7.4 (M'Donald) 1 I 1 W. G. and G. L. Stead's Culprit, 9.0 ... '... '„ JW. Young) 2 j 4 J. O'Shea). ; , (Winner- trained 'by F. -Siggott.) , Mount Victoria and Peroneal were the first to move, whilst Culprit began comparatively slowly. The top-weight, however, soon made up most of her lost ground, and turning for hoftie she was lying second. At the half distance she looked 3, winner, but Peroneal finished well and beat her by a neck. Makara wits a length further away, and Vibration was a bad last. Time, lmin 15 1-Ssec. NOTES ON THE RACING WELLINGTON STAKES. Needless to remark the most impoiv tant item on. the day's card was the Wellington Stakes for which a field of eight was saddled up. Mowbray won like a racehorse, for he was one of the last to get going, and had to come right round his neltL Though he is Aus-tralian-bred his sire Menschikoff was reared and raced in this country, and his success was immensely popular, Ermengarde went down well enough In her preliminary, but she was again comparatively slow to get going, and' although she ran t a goocf race, she never looked like » winner, Pei'dnilla showed brilliancy, but her form again suggested that bus or of el's the surface to be other

I than firm, and smart filly though she is she is quite unlikely to develop into an Oaks or Derby winner. Tatterley showed pace whilst, his condition lasted, but The Hague's performance was a disappointing one, many people who saw her race at Ellerslie being of opinion that she would go Very near beating Mow bray. A remarkable point about this event is that during the fifteen years in which it has been run the winner has never occupied more than lmin *\3£sec nor leas than lmin lsec in. completing the journey, Mowbrny's time of lmin 1 4-Ssec being as near to the mean as can be. WELLINGTON HANDICAP. There were no eleventh hour withdrawals from the Wellington Handicap, the issue of which was on all hands admitted to be remarkably open. The most surprising feature of the race was the form shown by a rank outsider in Master Laddo, who only failed to score outright by a good head. Apparently he' likes to hear hoofs rattling behind htm, and. ho doubt his owner-trainer will in future advise his jockey to "go to the front and stop there." Labour Day looked fit enough, but she was always at the tail end of the field, and her showing was in distinct contrast to the excellent form she displayed at Ellerslie. Sea Queen was done with soon after a mile had been traversed, and Dearest again just failed during, the final pinch. The latter is assuredly, however, racing into form, and will .win a good race ere the season is much further advanced. My Lawyer's display was a disappointing one, and it would seem that he is training off. Fresh and well he is a hard horse to beat over a seven to a nine furlong course, but he is evidently not a natural stayer. REMAINING .EVENTS, The opening event served to Introduce to us a most promising maiden performer in Kaniki, a powerful three-year-old colt, by Maniopoto from Ineuru's dam Kohina. Yesterday he was unlucky in so much that, *when well placed at the home tarn, he got on to an, opponent's heels, and," stumbling badly, he nearly oaine down. ' This, ,ol course, quite spoilt his chance. The great disappointment of the race was Lady Nolan, who was' never prominent, Distinction lan a great Tace under his big weight,' and had Reid called upton him with greater energy during the last few strides he might have reversed the position with Big Blast. The form shown on the previous day was well borne out in the January Welter. Both Aloha and Fashion Plate failed to go oil when the pinch came, and Ceylon was last all the' way, S. Keid was hard at work on the last named all the way up the back stretch, but she declined to reproduce either her bast public or her recent private form, and Tan like a jade. Rock Ferty has pace, but cannot stay, and San Pluie was always a long Way back. Ittimer was made a hot favourite foT I the Fitzherbert Handicap, in which she drew No. 1 position at the post, and was first away. She tired inside the dis* tance, and the little-fancied Briar Fatch beat her- easily. Secret Link was fancied, but those who took note of the recent track work were quite prepared to see } Immer finish in front of her. The Dotiro Cup was as usual contested by a smart field of. hacks, quite half-a-dozen of whom can muster up a lot of pace. Peg, however, is evidently going to turn out something like as good a mare as her dam Cora Lynn used to be, and the manner in which, she smothered I her opponents, to each of whom she. was conceding weight, was impressive. Heather failed to go on, and it may be that she has done enough racing for the present, whilst another well-fancied candidate in Fair Rosamond was always badly placed. Pasuadena finished in great style, and promises to be able to get a, lengthier journey. Naumai and' Full Rate were on their worst behaviour when ..called upon to line up for the Disposal Stakes, and whilst tiie former, whose jockey, Emersdri, had twice to dismount, was lucky enough to line up' and get away, Full Rate repeatedly refused to face the tapes. In this the backers- of Crosbie were probably fortunate^ as had the favourite only behaved himself he must have had a great chance. Both Indra and Over Hate finished fast and may be worth watching, in future engagements. Cfilprit was the, pea for the concluding event, and with the least bit more luck she would have won. As it was, however, she waa slow to move, and although she made up her lost ground in good style the e,fforfc told ujjon her, and Peroneal was &oing away from her again over the last thirty or forty yards. The result was strictly in accordance with the previous day's form, and backers apparently neglected U> note that Peroneal was meeting Sanguinary on 131b better terms. Makara ran one of his best races, but he is not so good a horse as Borne who have seen him score from a second-class lot have been led to believe. GORf RACES (fit tfiLfieaAPK— JftESS ASSOCIATION.) GORE, 23rd January. The Gore Summer Meeting concluded in fine weather to-day. There was a good -attendance and good racing. Speculation was brisk, the totalisator handling £9612, against £7524 for the saffle day last yeaT. The total for the meeting was £19,878,- againet £15,868 last year.
