The new tea kiosk recently erected by the City Council at Newtown Park Was formally opened 'by Ms 'Worship the' Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren) this morning, m the presence of a large assemblage 'of the public, who had gathered on the grourid in, connection with the early settlers' celebration^. In doing bo, he Said .that the erection of the kiosk marked another step in the advancement of the city, which meant an addition to the attractions that the- council was endeavouring to make in the improvement of the recreation grounds. All citizens would recognise that that was a very desirable object. Recently ■ the council had lit the park by electric light for the purposes of evening sports, and that was only a part of an extensive, programme that 'the council intended to carry through, with the hearty co-opera-tion of the citiiens, , because no matter who w.ere in the position of councillors or who was Mayor, no work could properly be carried through for the advancement' of the city without the hearty cooperation of the citizens in the undertaking, and he hoped that when they had, as they would have, at Easter time, a grand carnival gathering on the park, the citizens would show' that they had s* pride in the city and. that they intended to make it the greatest, the grandest, in New Zealand. He believed that the people of Wellington did not recognise its beauty, perhaps because they saw tdo little of it. There was i uo doubt that the park had been very much improved, and in time it would be made -still more attractive., He then, formally declared .the' kiosk open, and the brief ceremony concluded with three cheers for the early settlers.
