MARCONI CONTRACT
ENQUIRY BEING CONTINUED SHARES FALL, BUT RECOVER, By Telegraph .—Press Association.— Copyright. LONDON, 21st January. JThe Select Committee which is enquiring into the circumstances connected with the granting of the Marconi contract with the Post Office is continuing its investigations. Mr. Godfrey Isaacsj president of the Marconi , Company, in an interview, stated that Mr. Marconi had repeatedly asked to be allowed to give evidence before the committee, but was not allowed to do so. The company would not stand and be shot at in this fashion, since contract prices and materials had increased by 15 per cent. Following the company's request to be allowed to withdraw from the contract, Marconi shares fell to 3 13-I6th, but recovered, and closed at 4^. The Daily News approves of the cancelling of the contract. It states that the Imperial Defence Committee gave the impulse in favour of an immediate Imperial system, and this the Post Office gravely hampered. The strategic arguments which had convinced the Defence Committee were not impressive to laymen. If the contract were cancelled it could be reviewed, and the Government could see whether there was any real.! need for the projected stations. i
