HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of ' the Hutt County Council was held yesterday. There Were present : Councillors Galloway (chairman), Wakeham, Edwards, Whiteman, Welch, andj Howell. Notice of the appointment of Mr. W. S. Short as commissioner to enquire into tlie apportionment of the cost of ithe WaikanaeJßeikiorangi-road was received from the Public Works Department. Councillors Howell and Galloway and exCouncillor Lynch were appointed to act with the council's solicitor, Mr. A. de B.^Brandon, on the council's behalf. The Land and Survey Department informed the council that the GoVern« ment had decided not to purchase land in Akatarawa for scenic purposes. The council's overseer (Mr. V. Cudby) reported that the widening of Lowry Bay-road at the eastern end from Lower Hutt boundary was now in hand. The work was being pushed on during the fine Weather. He recommended that the eastern span of the Silverstream bridge, near the railway bridge, be filled up, -and the timber taken out. Slips had occurred on the Akatarawa-road, but could be dealt with at a cost of £5. The overseer also called attention to certain encroachments of fche Hutt River, near Maori Bank (Upper Hutt), which wei'e becoming serious. There was danger of 'the liver getting into an old hollow. , ,He recommended that it would be advisable to interview the owners of property in the vicinity *with a view to assisting the, council to stop further The report concluded by stating that all the roads in the county were in a good state of repair. Thp report -.and recommendations were adopted. The chairman reported on the sanitary conditions at Plimmerton. He thought the matter had better stand over till next ( year. This was agreed to. Mr. E. 'L. Biddi ford -waited on the council regarding the continuation of construction work on the Orongorongoroad. The council, it was stated, had £150 set aside for this work, and Councillor Wakeham, member for the riding, was instructed to see that it was spent to the best advantage. Mr, J. Hughes asked the council to have the gates across the Hutt-Waika-nae-road at the Waikanae end removed. Tliis was agreed to. The chairman moved that the following motion passed at a previous meeting be rescinded : — "That the clerk should notify Charles Slight, of Paekakariki, and Mrs. A. L. Greig. of Foxton. to remove fences off roads fronting their sections in Paekakariki township within 30 days of the notice." After some discussion the chairman withdrew his motion, and the clerk was instructed to inform Mr, Slight and Mrs. Greig of the council's intentions. If they did not act the council would enforce its previous resolution.
