ATTEMPT ON VICEROY'S LIFE
'♦ — LORD HARDINGE PROGRESSING SATISFACTORILY. CITIZENS' GRIEF AND ABHORRENCE. 8; Telepipb.-- Prew Anociit ion.— Copy r!|ht. DELHI, 26th December. The midnight bulletin showed that Lord. Hardinge is progressing satisfactorily. The sum of £6666 sterling has been subscribed as a reward for the capture of the bomb-throwerß, including the Maharaja of Patiala's £2000, Maharaja of Kashmir's £666, and Maharaja of Gwalior's £533. Business was suspended yesterday while a deputation of citizens waited on the Chief Commissioner and expressed grief and abhorrence. The temples and mosques were crowded with worshippers returning thanks for Lord Hardinge's safety. The bomb had a time fuse which exploded at the level of the umbrellabearer's knees. If it burst a second earlier it must have killed the Viceroy. As it was, the metal , pierced the heavily-padded cushions. The rutijaub chiefs in the procession wanted to deal with the house whence the bomb was thrown- summarily, but the officer in charge did not allow theftr to break the line of the procession.
