LOCAL AND GENERAL m > i A deputation, consisting of Messrs. M. J. Reatdon (president of the Trades Council), W. C. Noot (secretary), and R. S. Bedford, waited upon the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren) to-day, for the purpose of protesting against the action of the council in deciding to run trams on Christmas Day. The deputation was the outcome of representations made by the Tramway Employees' Union to the Trades Council. His Worship said that he thought there would be some difficulty in reopening the mat* ten as the council, by a majority, Uiad decided to run the service on the lines recommended by the Board of Management. Th© deputation protested against the action of any majority in so deciding. Mr. Reatdoti traversed the statement of the Engineer that it would pay the couhcil. This, he said, was scarcely in accordance with the agreement; which provided that, double time shall be paid to men who work 'on Christmas Day, and also provided that a day's pay shall be given to the men who did not work. He, therefore, claimed that the men who did work on Christmas Day were entitled to three days' pay. Protest was also made against the running of anything shorter than an hourly service. The Mayor replied that he did not think the council would go so far as to commit a breach of the agreement. He would report to the council the representations made by the deputation, and would ascertain whether the proposal to run a twentyminuted service on some of the lines was a breach of the agreement.
