MINING NEWS

Waiotahi.— During the past month/ 35 tons of ore have been treated for a return of 18oz 14dwt melted gold. From an old retort 50oz 9dwt of melted gold were also got. making a total of 690z 3dwt, value approximately £186. The manager, in his weekly report, states that in the drive west at No. 7 level the .footwall of the. main reef, has been cut. The quartz is characteristic of the fcotwall of the main lode in that it is of low grade. So far the reef has been penetrated for 4ft on the left-hand sido of the drive, but .no gold has "been seen. _ The lode has every appearance of being a large "body of quartz. The drive east on* the new reef is in 34ft. The reef is six inches wide, and very mullocky. Trials from the cross-reef proved the value to be 15s per ton. May Qireen.-^Seventy-five lodes of quartz were crushed for a return of £108 2e. In the drive west fr6m the main crosscut at No. 10 level (1000 feet), the reef opened out to four feet, and the quartz showed a little gold. The leef is in two ribs, divided by about four feet of country. The left-hand rib, according to the plan, corresponds in its strike with the reef driven upon eastward from the Bright Smile crosscut. The distance between the> tVo v places is about 130 ft. On the Exchange reef in the stope3 on the eastern side of the rise, better prospects are being met with. The manager is hopeful of the condition of the payable quartz met with in the drive. Ths quart-, shows gold freely, while two or vhrpe pounds of picked stone were selected.
