BRITAIN v. NEW SOUTH WALES
FIRST DAY'S PLAY. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copy right. SYDNEY, 6th December. The British lavn tennis players opened their tournament toiday agains^ Now South Wales. The attendance, which totalled 2000, included the State Governor, Lord Chelmsford, ahd Lady Chelmsford. Tho "weather was extremely muggy and warm, and the court had been affected by rain overnight and in the morning. , The best display was given by Horace Rice and Dixon, who reproduced their Melbourne struggle, though tho result was different. Otherwise the play throughout the afternoon was disappointing. E. L. Jones (New South Wales) shaped creditably against Lowe (Britain), and the young Australian's backhand work was noticeable. Lowe's best winhing stroke was a forehand cross-court drive, but he seemed to be lacking in "condition, and the heat affected him. Lowe won, 6-4, 6-8, 6-2. , The Rice-Dixon match was contested with great keenness, and Dixon was evidently anxious to ave.nge his Melbourne defeat. Rico displayed his usual activity, but the amouht of runnihg about the court ho was compelled to undertake in order to effect fine saves produced its effect at the finish. Rice, who wbb tiring badly, lost two games.* , Dixon's ~plaoing was judioious, and he made many beautiful half-volleys, though a number of his shots were inaccurate. Dixon won, 5>7, 6-2, 6-4 Parke and Lowe (Britain) played G. Wright and A. B. Jones (New South. Wales) in the doubles. All played below form, and though the match wa» closely contested and prolonged, it was Uninteresting and poor. Except for a few flashes of smart play, inaocuraoy marked the play of all four. In this match Parke and Lowe won," 7-5, 9-11, 64.
