The Imperial Chancellor, Herr yon Bethmann-Hollwegg, has stated in the Reichstag that the decision of the Federal Council, in connection with Bavaria's request for a more liberal inter* pretaiion of the nnti'Jesnit laws, merely involved the codification of long-prevail-ing practices with regard to the Jesuits. If the Roman Catholic Centre party withdrew its confidence from the Government in consequence it would simply make the anti-Jesuit laws the keystone of a political programme.
