SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT CYCLE RACE
TIMARU: sth December. A remarkable and serious accident marred the local road race of the Temuka Caledonian Society this afternoon. An eager crowd near the winning point ■ formed a narrow lane for the riders. Mr. George Ward, president of the society, who was in the front lin«, dropped a pencil, and stooped to pick it up. Before he recovered himself a rider cSme along, probably at a speed of twenty-five miles an hbur. and the pedal of the machine struck Mr. Ward on the side- of the head, and he fell unconscious, bleeding from ' mouth, nose, and ears. He was conveyed to the hospital, and is in a critical condition. The cyclist was thrown,* but he was unhurt.
