MARINE ENGINEERS
REQUEST FOR HIGHER WAGES. An important, move for better wages and conditions has been made by the Marine Engineers engaged in boats trading in New Zealand waters. They have approached the New Zealand shipowners with a request that a favourable consideration be given to an application for an increased scale of pay. They claim that they have received no increase since 1908, and draw attention to the increased cost of living since that date. Other requests are also made as regards the general conditions, but the wages question is the outstanding one. It is understood that the request has been considered by the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Shipowners' Federation, but no course of action has yet been decided.
