TELEGRAMS HEAVY RAIN IN OTAKI DISTRICT
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE. (bt tklegbaph- special to the post.) OTAKI, 6th November. In consequence of tho heavy rain which fall on Monday comuderable damage ha§ been done throughout the district, and the Road Board and County Council will have a deal of expense to meet. At first tvnly minor damage was reported from outlying districts, but, owing to the consistent rainfall, the damage done is now much greater. At Maoiakau and Otaki Gorges there have been a number of slips and wnsh-oute while the settlers along the banke of tho Otaki River have had an ahxious time, much fencing, etc., hay- , ing been swept away. At Rajigiuru, My. E. Hopkins had nearly 1000 chickens drowned, and much grain damaged, while other settlers' lands were flooded. The mouth of tho river has been interfered with, and a large tract of the beach has been swept away, the river, at the 6ame time, threatening to go ba«k to ite old course. Several small bridges and culverts in the district have, suffered damage, and in isolated instances stock have been drowned. A meeting of the County Council will be held on Saturday, when the amount of damage will be reported on by the engineer. To-day's rainfall ,wius $,he cause of further damage.
