ANNUAL MEETING OF THE NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE. Mr. L. S. Fanning presided at the annual general meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists, held at the Town Ha!l yesterday afternoon. , The annual report and balance-sheet (previously published) were adopted. The following were elected officers of the council for the ensuing year* President, Mr. L. S. Fanning (Wellington) ; vice-presidents, Mr. C. H. Critchley (Napier) and Mr. A. T. Moore (New Plymouth); general secretary, Mr. A. N. Field (Wellington); general treasurer, Mr. F. J. Earle (Wellington); auditor, Mr. A. F. T. Chorlton (Wellington). Steps were authorised to be taken to push forward the movement for standardising conditions of employment throughout New Zealand, the incoming council to use every endeavour to effect this end by conciliatory methods through the institute, and in cases where conciliatory methods prove unavailing to support such further steps as may prove necessary, f The institute accepted the offer of Mr. A. N. Field to compile a register of all journalists in New Zealand, with a record of their services, the incoming council being instructed to publish such register on its completion, either in toto or in an abridged form, as the finances may warrant and the council may deem expedient. To mark the twenty-first anniversary of the foundation of the institute the surviving members of the committee appointed on Bth Augost, 1891, to draft the constitution of the institute, and the surviving members of the first council were given the rights of membership for life without further financial obligations to tha institnte or its branches. The meeting expressed its hearty appreciation of the New Zealand Journalist and the work of its editor (Mr, F. J. Earle). In token thereof Mr. Earie was invited to accept a present of 15 guineas. It was resolved that steps be taken to establish relations with kindred organisations of journalists in English-speaking countries, and that information be obtained as to the scope of operation of such bodies, particularly with regard to provident funds, employment bureaux, and other matters provided for in the objects of the institute. It was resolved that a special committee of three should be set up to prepare recommendations for recasting and simplifying the constitution and by-laws of the institute.
