HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED REPORT. The Department of Agriculture and Commerce has received the following j cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, 21st ! September. (Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot) :— * Mutton.— The market is slightly weaker, with le3S demand, on account of the high prices, but stock is moderate. Holders are firm; No change in price's— viz., Canterbury, 4|d per lb; North Island, 4£d, Lamb.— The market is quiet. The weather lately has been very unfavourable to the sale of lamb. Supplies of home-grown lambs are heavy, and are loWeiing the prices of Mew Zealand lamb. Canterbury, s|d per lb; other than Canterbury, s^d per lb. Beef. — The market is firm, although large supplies are coming forward. Plate chilled curtails the retail demand. New Zealand hinds, 3|d per lb; fores, 3^d. Plate chilled hinds, 4|d per lb; fores, 3id. Butter. — The market is Very firm, with a brisk demand for best quality, but for ordinary quality, of which a large quantity is on hand, a poor demand continues. Prospects aie uncertain, and speculative. New Zealand, in second hands, nominal, 122s per cwt; Australia, 114s ; Danish, 131s ; Siberian, 110s. Cheese. — The market is quiet, little doing. A good feeling prevails. Canadian, 65s 6d per cwt ; English cheddar, 735 ; New Zealand, at second hand, 6?s. , Hemp.— The market is firm. There is a better demand. A good business has [ been dona in distant deliveries — OctoberDecember. New Zealand, "good fair" grade, £27 10s per ton; "fair," £26; "fair current" Manila, £28; January to March, £28 10s. The output from Manila for the week wae 18.000 bales. Stock New Zealand hemp, 1025 tons. Wool. — Market remains firm, and prices have slightly advanced for all grades of merinos. Cocksfoot Seed.— The market in quiet. Continent good quality is selling at low 1 price. Linseed. —The market is firm, with a hardening tendency. Bombay, 63s 6d; Calcutta., 62s 9d; Plate, 565; New Zealand (nominal), 66s 6d. Wheat. — The market is quiet, but steady. English is in unsatisfactory condition. New Zealand long-berried, ex granary, per quarter of 4961b, 40s. Oats.— The market is firm, with more enquiry. New Zealand short sparrowbills, 26s 6d. Peas.—The spot market is steady, but demand is principally speculative. New Zealand partridge, 40s 6d.
