Herd, realised ( £8 3s 6d, which will go to the funds df the Zoological Society and be devoted to the payment for the pair of flamingoes ordered recently. Mr. J. Castle, treasurer of the society, reports that 662 coins were received (1 half-crown, 13 shillings, 130 sixpences, 242 threepences, 264 pennies, and 12 halfpennies). Unfair competition with "sweated" goods in such trades as that of printing was mentioned by the Hon, F. M. B. Fisher, Minister for Customs, at the annual dinner of the Letterpress Printers, Lithographers^ and Paper-cut-ters' Union on Saturday night. Mr. Fisher said that New Zealand was afc present suffering from such competition. If by the aid of a representative recently sent abroad they could get on to the track of these goods which were manufactured in foreign countries by prison labour or under sweating conditions, and then exported as British goods, they would confiscate every bale of them as they came to New Zealand. Their tariff was at present defective and was operating against, the country iv some I cases, the printing trade for instance ; but the Ministry hoped to have a revision prepared before npxt session.
