Three hundred and fifty Cretans, eluding the British cruiser Medea and the French cruiser Bruix, suddenly landed at S&mos, and or© marching on Vathy, hoping to overthrow the Turkish garrison and proclaim Cretan union with Greece. [Towards the end of August it wa« announced that French and British warships were to be told off to keel) a watch on the Cretan filibusters, and prevent their landing at Samos.]
