HIS HOLINESS THE POPE
Writes the Daily Chronicle :— " The Pope, who, despite the predictions of the snpersitious, has just completed the ninth year of his pontificate, is said to maintain in the Vatican the simplicity of the parish priest of Salanzo. But he cannot avoid being the most expensively dressed man in the world. For, though a Pope may eat what h« likes, he must be dressed in accordance with the traditional etiquette of his office, which prescribes that he should wear different garments every day of the year. Nearly all his robes are ornamented with rare jewels, his surplices are of the most valuable lace ; his gloves are embroidered with pearls in the shape of a cross ; his 'woollens' are prepared fiom the fleeces of a herd of sheep kept specially for this purpose ; and his rings, set with gems of matchless quality, are priceless. It is by far the most costly wardrobe in the world."
