MINING NEWS
OCCIDENTAL -CONSOLIDATED. The manager of the Occidental Consolidated Mine reports that the return from 84 loads of general ore and 1001b of- picked stone is 3970z of melted' gold. This is valued at approximately £1050. MANAGERS' REPORTS. Waitangi Consolidated.— The main drive on the reef is in 3688 ft. The last 20ft of driving shows the reef is greatly split up into several branches. The footwall portion, about 2ft in width, has gone off 'into the hanging wall in a north-westerly courae. Twenty feet east of this point, at the end of the main drive, a large body of quartz is coming in from the footwall side. There are now 'abdut' three feet of quartz exposed, and no sign of the footwall. The stone looks 'very well, showing a little rhodenite and other favourable minerals. This may prove to" "be an important development, as it may bfe another branch of the reef which waß not seen in this level. A crosscut has been start-* ed in the footwall to prove the width of this body of ore.' ' Waiotahi. — The shaft is now down 61ft below No. 7 level, and 689 ft from the surface. It is apparently through the reef in the eastern end of the shaft, but another five feet will require to be sunk before the reef will pass out at the western end. The reef is still giving off a lot of" gas, to expel which a large quantity of air is required. In , the main low level (1000 ft), the Victoria subsidiary crosscut will in another 88ft reach a point underneath the Waiotahi shaft. Kuranui. — The drive near the break is in good country. The reef has improved in size, being now fully 15 inches wide. By sinking and rising, connection has been made with, the drive going" in front the slope. " The reef in the face corresponds with and is part of the main lode. The drive near the break will be pushed on with, and is in future to be called the Sou-west. Dominion.—^During the past week driving off the run fti the low level has been in hand. The- manager is now confident that there will be no further trouble in penetrating the fault. Watchman.— The north rise is up 53ft. The reef has taken a flatter underlie, and, to all appearance, a firmer description of 6re should be met with. . The level at 70ft is in 139 ft. A flat head is crossing the face at a long angle. The quartz on the footwall side is more promising than hitherto. Two men are shooting the quartz on the eastern parallel, a fair amount being obtained. The Middle Parallel reef is hard, and about four feet are being blasted out. The quartz occasionally shows coarse gold, and is heavily charged with sulphides and zinc blende. No. 4 rise is up 45ft. About 3ft 6in of ore is being broken ou^ which shows gold freely at intervals. A fair quantity of ore is being won from the stopes on the West Parallel reef. v
