Tho New Zealand ladies' hockey tournament was continued to-day in fine weather, the matches being played at St. Albans Park. Tho grounds, however, were not as good as thoso at Sydenham Park, the grass being much too long in places. The attendance of spectators again was good. Tho matches for tho day resulted : — A Section— Canterbury B (2) v. Taranaki (0), Wairarapa, (1) v. Nelson (0) Poverty Bay (2) v. Manawatu (1). B Section — Canterbury A (4) v. Buller (0), Auckland (2) v. Wellington (2), Wanganui ,(4) v. West Coast (1). WELLINGTON v. AUCKLAND. Auckland, playing with the sun in their eye 6, opened the attack and got well down, until tKe Wellington forwards got in a return, Miss M'Donnell bringing the ball down, beating the opposition aud centreing to the forwards. Miss Harris got possession, and with a quick hit that beat the 'keeper, easily scored. Wellington 1, Auckland 0. The northerners answered with a rush that reached the circle, but the yellow forwards came down again, though stopped completely by the backs, MiE6 Gear being prominent. Forward play followed, Miss Cooke being conspicuous-. From line play the ball went into the circle, and the forwards were with it. A big stroke by Miss Kenny equalised the tally. _ Auckland kept up the attack, and Miss Laing and Miss Harris relieved temporarily ; but Auckland were ready, and at once were down in the circle again, play being about there. Miss Campbell showed up well ; the danger zone was cleared, and the yellow forwards showed Well in defence. Miss M'Donnell got away and centred close to circle, but Miss Payton saved at the corner and enabled Auckland to get >back, Miss Pickering narrowly missing a score. Miss M'Donnell got possession, but Miss Payton stopped again, the ball going out. Tho game now developed into on exchange bf rushes, all in Wellington's territory, and Miss Kenny missed a pa6B which would have let them right in. Miss Cooke centred, and play settled in the circle. Miss Tinney cleared cleverly. Miss Laing came away brightly, but Miss Davis stoped and sent back. Mies Kenny shot, but the ball rose over the net. Wellington were working " well, and though they could not clpar, stopped very many chances of ecoring. Just before half-time the Wellington forwards attacked strongly, but could' not Ecore. The second spell opened with a sound attack by Wellington that lasted for some time. The blue forwards brought the 'ball down, and Wellington had a spell in defence, but beat the attack back to half-way. Miss Cooke got it down the line, travelling fast, and centred • unselfishly. _ Miss Tinney tried tot the line, but Miss Cooke again got possession, cen* tred again, and approached the circle. Auckland wore them off, and then attacked in turn. Play lingered in Wellington's territory until Miss M'Donnell got away. She sent the ball into tho net, but from far outside the circle. tho opening Miss Cooke got possession, but left, the centreing too late. l*l'ie ball went out,' and play swept back. The forwards went down quickls', and Miss Harris passed right across. Miss Dement shoU- Wellington 2, Auckland 1. Straight away play swepk dowrf, and left a dozen struggling iv the mouth of the net. It was impossible to # say who actually put'the ball in. Wellington 2, Auckland 2. Auckland attacked again strongly, but the others answered, and Miss M'Donneil came close- to scoring. Wellington's^ halves were attending to keeping sorties back, and feeding their fori wards consistently. The Northerners would not be denied, and fought back to hajf-way, only to have a quick return. Long- shots towards tho right line gavo chances 4° Miss Cpoko and Mis?. Campbell. ' Mtsfe .Pickering had a tricky shot thnfc failed. More line play and forward battling left ,Mi*s Kenny a shot that barely failed, apparently because no one wished to 6hoot. Auckland missed a lot of chances of scoring, and Wellington had their work cut out in' beating them off until the forwards came down t and made things merry in Auckland's circle. Miss Wylie took a" big part in shifting things to midfield. and past. A miss by Miss Maddison let the yellows down again, and though they were taken back they came down, and a great scramble followed in the circle, which was result? less, and the game ended : Auckland 2, Wellington 2. THE OTHER, GAMES. The 'Canterbury A-Buller match resulted in a win for the former by 4 goals to nil. The play of the Canterbury team was much superior to that 'shown by them on the previous day, due largely, no doubt, to the faot that they were meeting a weaker team. The Buller girls wore weak in tackling and in marking, and their stick work was not too good, the long grass troubling them. The Canterbury fi-Taranaki match was a very keen 'contest, and seemed likely to result in a draw. Tarannki wore the faster team, but Canterbury_ B were superior in passing and placing. Their otrcle , work, however, was anything but good, and quite a number of chances to score were missed. They were very lucky towards the i latter' part of the second spell in scoring two goals. The game between^ W,airarapa and Nel- j j son was disappointing. Wairarapa attacked consistently, and frequently reached the goal. I Wanganui got the better of West Coast by 4 to 1. Tho game was a fast and interesting one. The forward work of both teams was usually good, Miss Ivy Pcrritt (Wanganui) showing^ herself particularly good, both at dribbling and driving. One of the players, Miss_ Kir'koski, got hurt, but recovered sufficiently td continue with the game. . Manawatu put up a good fight against Poverty Bay, which, However, was the faster and more powerful team. Though the game was full of movement and incident, the resulting score was onl/ 2 to 1. There were numerous rushes up and down field, and the Poverty Bay team showed that it had some goon runners among its members, while Manawafcu, though it* tactics were perhaps less brilliant, shone "at defensive vvork. Goals were scored by Mißses Fairlie and Pearce for Poverty Bay, and by Miss W. Hodder for Manawatu. The championship points to date are as follow : A Section : Wairarapa 3, Canterbury B 2i, Otago 2, Poverty Bay 2, Nelson li, Manawatu i, Taranaki i. B Section: Hawkes Bay 3, Wellington 24, Canterbury A 24, Wanganui 2£ t Auckland 14, West Coast 0, Buller 0.
