PECULIAR POSITION

/AHIATOA, 9th July. A peculiar position has arisen -regarding the .seat of Mr. J. I. Fox- on the Fahiatua Borough Council. In' May last, when the vacancy occurred, Mr* Fox was elected unopposed, but it appears that he was not then a British subject, and has only been letters of naturalisation since. v The validity of his election, has now been challenged. ■Mr. Fox, when questioned on the subject, explained that, prior • to hie nomination, for tho seat, ho had taken th© oath of allegiance and had applied

for letters of naturalisation. He had believed that everything waa in order, and that he could sit on the council. He explained that there had been, some delay in receiving the papers, and when, subsequently, he enquired at the office of the Slinister for Internal Affairs he wa« informed that they were waiting till they signed a batch of naturalisation papers. Ac an objection had been raised he thought that the proper course was for him to retire from the council. Mr. Fox is now taking legal advice. BLIND MAN-LADY ISLINGTON'S . SYMPATHY AUCKLAND, 9th June. • While engaged in blasting operations at the City Council's waterworks at Nihotapu last January, William Adams was severely injured by a premature explosion. Ho was removed to the hospital, where one eye was removed, and he became blind in the other. While in Auckland Lady Islington frequently visited the hospital, and Adams's case aroused 'Her Excellency^ sympathy. Adams 'has now left the hospital, and to-day Lady Islington communicated with Captaiu Boscawen, A.D.C., and asked him to ascertain if there wa6 any way in which she could assist Adams. Captain Bo3cawen will visit Adams to-mor-row, and convey Lady Islington's sympathy.
