BETTER CREW WON RACE FOR CHALLENGE CUP GUY NICKALLS'S COMMENT

Mr. Guy Nickalls, th« well-known exoarsman and sculling authority, state* that in his opinion the bettor crew won, though it is only fair to say that a marked weakness in the Leander's crew caused the boat to go sideways for mo6t of the course. He does not think th« Australians will again beat the Leander'a crew, sine© tho weakness has been discovered in time to remedy it. The Times, commenting on the race for the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Regatta, says the Australians' style is not fundament-ally different from ths English. The difference is rather in the rig than the style. The determining factor of the rig requires fuller investigation than it has received. A special effort is required on the part of British oarsmen to compete successfully with foreigners and colonials. The latter row more easily," and produce a» great (if not greater) pace. Other papers pay high tribute to the Australian powers. The Sportsman says the Leanders erred badly in not regarding the Australians seriously enough. The result is a serious blow at the English style of rowing. Tho Standard says there ia no excuse for the Leanders' failure, and adds that the prospect of turning the tables at Stockholm are very remote.
