WANGANUI HARBOUR

|BY TEUSGBAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] , WANGANUI, Bth July. There ie every indication that the deep-water harbour predicted for WaI nganui will come to pass if the neceß6ary i money for the work is forthcoming. Mr. Leslie Reynolds, in , his 1895 report, said :—": — " It is to be expected, when these works have been carried out to the extent herein advised, that there will be a scour sufficient to maintain a depth at th« entrance of from 12ft to 14ft at low water springy tidee, or equal to from 20ft to ia^ft at high water spring tides." These expectations nave been fully realised. Notwithstanding unfavourable winds and currents, the bar continues to improve, and there is how a minimum depth of 22ft, while both inside and outside i this bar or crest there is much deeper water. Once the bar is removed there is every reason to believe that a minimum of 30ft or 32ft will be. secured. At the last meeting of the board, when 22ft 1 on the bar was announced, Mr. W. J. Poison, who, on behalf of the country districts, has been the chief opponent' of" the harbour works, congratulated the engineer on the greatly improved state of the entrance channel. He had, he said, previously held the opinion that the workis would result in silting up the entrance, and it was very gratifying to find it was otherwise.
