NEW RAILWAY TIMETABLE
In the- Wellington district the new ■railway time-table came into force to-day. The chief feature of the .alterations is the extra, train each way between Cross's Creek and Woodville, which has necessitated certain adjustments. The down train from Woodvill© also now reaches Wellington at 7.20 p.m. instead of at 7.40 p.m. ae formerly, this slight alteration affording passengers for the South Island a little extra time in which to catch their boat.
A resolution similar to that passed by the Auckland District Council of the United Labour Party, and published in another part of this issue, has be«n adopted^ by the Wellington Bricklayers' Industrial Union of Workers. For some weeks, past a number of the Port Chalmers -fishermen have been in the habit of line-fishing in the channel off the end of the George-street Pier (sajs the Otago Daily Times). At that point the channel is somewhat narrow, and on several occasions Home and intercolonial liners have had some -difficulty in keeping clear of the fishing fleet, as the latter are always anchored right in the fairway. It is anticipated that a serious accident will probably occur before the fishermen fully realise their danger. Within the past two or three weeks at leaet half a dozen large vessels have had to stop their engines in order to gvvfe the boats timo to get out of the way, but many of them simply go on fishing and apparently trust to luck that the vessels will keep clear of them. Several narrow escapes hay« already been reported, for -which Ihefishermen appear to be solely to blatn«>, as the Harbour Board by-law distinctly *ayt»: "No vessel shall be anchored iv the fairway of any channel or other pewition sr> as to obstruct the approach to any whaTf. pier, or jetty." There is grave danger of one of these Vmall craft being swept under a «teamer's et«m when obstructing the fairway and getting smashed up by the vessel's propeller. Messrs. E. Johnston nud Co. will hold a talo of oak fumishinvg, in their rooms, Lambtoa-quuy, on YVudnutiday, commencing at 1.30 o'clock.
