CHARGE OF THEFT
[BT TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, 28th : June! ' Aft the Magistrate's Court 'this morning Samuel Smith was charged with having stolen sums of u-.oney totalling £6 8s 6d, the property of Jorgin K. Christensen. Accused pleaded guilty. The sub-inspector said accused was a pupil teacher in a Sumner School. H« was boarding with Christensen, and had taken the sums of money from a cashbox in Christensen'fi bedroom. He had been detected by means of' marked coins. The accused said he had taken the money to pay his board. "Teachers are very badly paid," he said. "I only' get £50 a year, and out of that I have to nay 15s a week board." The magistrate (Mr. Bailey) said the wages were not so very bad for a boy of seventeen. , ' . The mother of - the accused stated that he was a good boy, but, she thought, too young to be away from home. Sho would be willing to refund the money. The magistrate said he would deal leniently with accused, who would be convicted and ordered to refund ,the money and to come up for sentence when called upon. " And I hope iSis will be a lesson to you," added the magistrate.
