TWO OLD SHIPS
The 123 years old ship which Bailed recently from Queenstown to New York will have to survive a long time yet to beat the Belay Cairns, built on tho Thames in tho early part of the seven- n teenth century. This boat was boucht: in 1688 by William 111., Prin<» of Orange, to convoy him to England, and thenceforward iserved for many yeare a» the principal Royal yacht. tluderGeorgo I. die was sold to a firm who employed her on the West Indian trade until the close of the century. Then. tho Betsy Cairn* became a collier, and ahe was still in excellent condition in 1827, when she struck a rock off South Shields and was totally wrecked. The exact date of her construction is nob known, but the vessel must have been atleaet 190 years old at tho time of th* disaster. Her timbers served to make snuff-boxee. some of which are still treasured in Orange lodges.
