SCOTLAND'S GLORY AND SHAME
It is a singular fact that no memorial has been erected to mark the birth-place of Scotland's national hero — Sir William Wallace. Thanks to the efforts of a number of London Scotsmen, this stigma on Scottish patriotism is being removed by the erection of a memorial to Wallace beside the old castle at Elderslie, in Renfrewshire, where, according to the highest authorities, .the patriot was born. This memorial, which ,will cost about £2000, takes the form of a maseive granite column, national in character and design, and its erection will be a worthy tribute to one who played bo important a part in the promotion of Scottish Independence. Already a goodly sum has •been subKcribod for the memorial, and nhe executive confidently appeals to Scotsmen throughout the world to show their sym. pathy with the scheme by contributing liberally to the fund. The Elderslie Wallace Memorial movement has the support of the Duke of Argyll, Lord Rosebery, Right Hon. A. J. Balfour, Lord Strathcona, Lord Lamington, Lord Inverclyde, Sir Thomas Glen-Coats (Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire), Sir Charles Bine Renshaw, Sir Robert Laidlaw, Mr. Andrew Carnegie, and other prominent Scotsmen. Mr. W. A. Bowie, Royal Scottish Corporation, Crane-court, E.C., London, is the treasurer.
