A conference of delegates repre.senting the Stage Employees' Unions of the four centres meets at ttio Trades Hall, Wellington, on Monday next. Tho conference is for tha purpose of discussing the question of direct affiliation with the Australian Stage Employees' Federation. Matters in reference to local. Labour conditions will also be gone into at the ingThe Italian Parliament has passed, by 26G votes to 79, the Government Monopoly Insurance .Bill, which establishes life assurance as a State monopoly. The Bill enables the- Government to authorise life assurance companies to continue their operations for ten. years, under certain conditions. A similar beneficial measure — the Insurance Monopoly Bill — has also been passed by the Uruguayan Parliament. The provisions of this Bill are more drastic than those co sweepingly approved of by the Italian legislators, for although the Uruguayan Government Government does not demand tho immediate extinction of private incur ance companies, they wili henceforth exUt on a very precarious basis of toleration, and it is within the power of the Government to decree their closing at any "lbmunt it chooses.
