A RBOR DAY
CITY COUNCIL'S PROGRAMME. P.ECOMMENDATION ADOPTED. A considerable programme of treeplanting was recommended by the Reserves Committee in its report to the City Council last evening. The committee reported that it had considered the question of the programme far Arbor Day, and recommended that the council should undertake the planting of eection 48 Town Belt (this eection contains 9 acres, and lies to the west of the 'city at the back of th» Terrace, and south of the University) _as the official site. Other sites to be planted include the following :—: — The triangle at the intersection of Coutts-strcet and Onepu-road, Kilbirnia. Tanera-crescent Reserve, - Sugar Loaf Reserve, and Ohiro-terrace bank, Brooklya - . . \ Adjoiniug Kelburne Park, Newtown Lawn Tennis Club's grounds, Kilbirni« and Mitchelltown Schools, and Maar'amaerescebt right-of-way. _ The committee had authorised the Superintendent of Reserves and the City Engineer to make th© necessary preparations for the planting of the trees, and His Worship the Mayor to make all arrangements for the observance of Arbor Day. The committee stated that in desiring to give every assistance and encouragement to citissenß to assist on Arbor Day in beautifying tho city, it would like to impress upon them the necessity of giving some assistance to see that the trees are- protected. The committee had also considered the question of the futuro policy to be adopted in regard to the tree-planting on the Town Belt, and had instructed the City Engineer and Superintendent of Reserves to confer on th» subject and report with their recommendations. The report was adopted.
