THE CITY TRAMS
m PROPOSED KADICAL CHANGES. "THE SERVICE MUST PAY ITS WAY." "One thing in connection with the tramway- service ib clear to me. It is this : lie service must pay its way. " Thus spoke the Mayor to a Post reporter to-day. He was referring to a scheme for the complete reorganisation cf the service with a view iirst and last of strengthening the financial position of the undertaking. The details of the scheme were not available for public information until they had been first communicated to the Council as a whole. It was learned, however^ ths. 1 ; some of the unnecessary stopping places would be cut: out in order to lessen the wear and tear on t-he rolling stock resulting from that cause. Further, that same of the sections will be reduced in length, and the concessions that have been granted on certain sections will undergo revision. An improved timetable is being compiled and it is hoped by the proposed scheme to make the tramway service a more paying proposition, than it is at present. The question is recognised as such a very important one, affecting, as it does the citizens and suburban residents as a whole, that a special meeting of th& council is to be called to deal with it. It is believed that the scheme will practically amount to a raising of the fares, if only by the reduction, of some *6f the sections over which passengers are iiow carried for Id, and that this will especially apply to the Newtown-Govern-meot Station line. - Tfie site of the proposed Wellington Central Station in Bunny-street, not many yards from, the existing Lambton Station, will be the new point from which, the tramway services will radiate. The reorganisation scheme has been drawn up by the Tramway Board (of ■which the City Engineer is chairman) and it has been designed co as to serve the city for many years, once it is approved and adopted, providing for every Jikely contingency.
