DREDGE MANCHESTER
WARSHIPS' FRUITLESS SEARCH. I"** TILIGBAPH — PBESS ASSOCIATION.) n , • „. AUCKLAND, 6th May. Captain Hickley, of the Encounter, this morning said that the Challenger had searched for the missing dredge Manchester in the western .portion of the lasman Sea from Sydney. What was more probably the area in which the dredge was lost was covered by the Encounters aearch, which made between o<ideg. south and 40deg. couth. The method of procedure adopted by the vessel was to move on lines parallel to the trade route between Wellington and bydney. The area was thoroughly covered between the North Cape and Sydney, and the Encounter waa in constant communication with merchant ships, which had , been instructed to keep a sharp look-out for the Manchester. The captain of the cruiser Pioneer etates that on rounding Cape Maria van Diemen on the outward voyage a , very | heavy south-westerly gale was met 'with,. and big seas swept the decks almost constantly. The gale increased in violence,,! and it was some time before the weather moderated again. He is of opinion that if the dredge had been disabled in such' weather there would be no chance of her remaining afloat. There was no possibility, of an open boat living in such a sea.
