FIRST AID.

AMBULANCE WORK ST. JOHN ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING. The St. John Ambulance Association held its annual meeting last evening in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall, Mr. J. G. W. Aitken presided over a very large attendance, which filled the hall. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, tho chairman said tho association had had a very sue- ri cessful year — not quite so good as the best." There had been 408 ttudents; taking leseone in first aid and home nursing. The Satuiday collection had not been accorded so genuine a response as in former yeais, -but the association had been so successful in the past that there were now competitors in the field seeking to raise money by street collections, and laet year the Ambulance Association had been the third party to make appeal to the public. The speaker paid a tribute to the work of the two nursing sisters, who went amongst the poor of the ciiy on missions of mercy. These nurses had paid during the year '2881 visits, or about 12 visits per day, and 118 people had received first aid at the hands of membere of the Ambulance Brigade. This showed that the institution had done useful work. Mr. D. M'Laren (Mayor of Wellington), in seconding the motion, commended most cordially the work the association was doing, both in supplying nurses, for the benefit of the sick poor and in instructing men and women in the art of relieving the pain of those injured by accident. It was most necessary in these days, when accidents in factories and on highways were by no means uncommon. It was necessary that there should be ready at haad men with skill- and ready nerve to render first aid. .He hoped -next year 1 the association would meet, with more generous financial support. , - The adoption of the report and bal-ance-sheet followed without further discussion. .The ohairman r then distributed the awards. Councillor Jojui Smith proposed th© f ollowing committee : — Me&dames- S. A. Rhodes, A. H. Waters, J. P. Firth, A. A. Carrigan, Barltrop, J. P. Luke, H. W. Preston, L. Menzies, M. Hacon, Misses L.
