infinite information regarding A TRANSACTION. AUCKLAND, 6th May. In connection with the proposed purchase of the Orakei Block by the Auck : land City Council from the Maori owners and the steps that it is believed have been taken by private soeculators U> get in ahead ot' the City (Council, definite information is available of at least one transaction for which a transfer has been lodged in the Maori Land BoaTd office (but which is not valid until confirmed by the Maori Land Board). The area of land concerned is 46 acres, and the price is' £4500. The Orakei Committee of tho City Council has decided to oppose this or any other transfer, and, as already intimated, the Mayor has been authorised to proceed to Wellington if necessary in connection with these transactions. Seen by a reporter with Tegard to the above transaction, the Mayor said he did not think there would be much difficulty in successfully opposing the transfers on the ground that these private dealings were not in the best interests of the Maoris. The city can do much better than this for the Maoris, and will havo no difficulty in proving it, said the Mayor in conclusion.
