MINISTER FOR EDUCATION

REFERENCE TO HIS WORK. , fEY. TELEGRAPH — IT.ESiS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister for Education, passed through Christchurch this morning. Speaking of his work since he took office, he said there were many directions in' #hich enquiries would have to be prosecuted in % the public interest. A main question was whether the State was getting value for the money spent on education. That covered the question of efficiency. He wanted to know if a higher, standard of efficiency could be secured by better'coordination and administration. . The powers of education boards and other local bodies, their finance, and possible overlapping might profitably be enquired into, as well as improvement of the syllabus and the extension of agricultural instruction. Mr. Hanan mentioned also teaching methods, secondary schools, promotion of. teachers, centralisation of rural schools, the scholarship system, and superannuation as proper questions for further enquiry. He did not men tion specifically the question of setting up- an education commission, but appeared to have. that possibility in mind.
