It is believed that private speculators made large purchases, this being one cause of the shortage. j The opinion is expressed in a telegram from Wellington, which is by no means echoed here, that local garages have very short -supplies, supplying customers at whatever they have to pay themselves. Other quotations vary from 30s to 4Us per case. One tirm reports that it has secured a thousand gallons which-,; are due to-morrow. *j
