HUTT RIVER BOARD.

GROYNES DOING GOOD WORK. The monthly meeting of the Hutt River Board whs held last evening. There wero present— The chairman (Mr. H. Baldwin), and Messrs. R, G. Knight and M. W. Welch. The proposal to construct a groyne near the Silverstreain railway bridge, for protective purposes, was again considered. Before coming to a final decision the board decided to pay a visit of inspection to the site proposed. ■• , Mrs. Kingdon wrdte complaining of the board's workmen using her section for the purposo of gaining access feo the river in carrying out protective works. The clerk reported that he htul replied to the effect that the board wag acting within its rights. This action was approved. Reporting on new work in the lower district, the overseer ,(Mr. E. Fisher) stated that protective work on the Hutt Borough Council's land was in progress, and would be completed within a week. On the 9th inst. tho river was flooded, and rose to a level of 7ft above normal, and there were three freshes of 3ft 6in each also registered during the month. The protective works were not affected. The groyna at Meiling Bridge was operating successfully, and also the extended groynes opposite Kiugdon's boaoh. Tho lower river groyne bchoino south of Whito's-line had still further improved the river channel by the action of the flood, and good results had boon obtained throughout by the agency of the groynes. In the upper district the boulder silk in tho branch of the river abovo Maaon'B Gardens had been completed, and considerable hlling of the branch had been effected already. The complete cost of the sills was £40 7s lOd, against an estimate of £40 12s 9d. Tho excavation of the channel at Pitcaithly's cable tower waa completed with satisfactory results The cost, of the work was £36 5s 2d. Mr. Fiithor drew attention to the fact that tho carting contract expired on 12th May, and it would be necessary to call for fresh tenders. _Ac fai- as the cartage in the uppor district was concerned, tho board was advised to let this contract to a carter at Upper Hutt. Tho report was adopted, tho recommendations to be duly carried out.
