REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY
FINAL FDtt NORDERN CUP. WON BY MANAWATU. Tho final to decide the first holders of tllß Noi'dpm Cup Was played at Duppastreet this morning between Manawatu and" Marlborough, and resulted in a win for the Manawatu hockey; representatives by 6 goals to nil. Tho teams were as follow: — Manawatu (green and white) — Burge, Kibblewhite, Kcrsluke, Bason, Moore, Ellison, Amos, Fitt, Crump (captain), Dixon, and Hammer. Marlborough (black and white) — Stocker, Harris, Reed, Le Comte, Ferry (captain), Mark, Jackson, Hester, Wihitwell, JVlatthewß, Whiting. Mestrs. W. J. Organ and A. W. Manning controlled tho gauie. S'roin^ the commencement, the game gave promise of being fast and interesting, and the play* moved up and down tho field very quickly. Marlborough were tho first to get within reasonable striking distance, the ball travelling high over the net. The first goal of the match was ccorcd by_ Crump (Manawatu's captain), Stocker, in goal,' making a poor attempt to_ clear. Tha ball came- from the loft wing "into tho circle, and from a scramble, Crump grasped an easy opportunity and netted. Before half-time, Crump had scored another goal for Manawatu, and the attack of his forwards was worrying the opposing backs a good deal. Marlborough, on several occasions, came within an ace of scoring, but the shooting of their forwards was faulty. At half-time the score remained unchanged, with Crump's two goals in favour of Manawatu, against Marlborough's nil. On resuming, it soon becamo apparent that the Manawatu team wero in better condition than their opponents, and tho play was almost entirely in favour of Manawatu, tho Marlborough team only occasionally becoming dangerous. Crump scored two more goals, and Fitt and Hummer ono each for Manawatu, and the game resulted in a win for Manawatu, by 6 goals to nil. Tho winners were easily the better team, Kerslake, Ribblewhit© (a former Wellington representative full-back), and Moore giving the best displays in the bacKs, and Crump playing particularly well in the forward line. The forwards were a good lot, and kept tho ball moving nicely in contrast with the opposing forwards, who frequently hesitated atln lost good opportunities. Among iho losers, Le Comto and Ferry were prominent in tho backs, and Matthews in the forwards.
