ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

At tho inquest on tho body of a child which was found by a iishing boat on Sunday, evidence was given to the effect that tho body was that of a male infant aged 10 months. It was impobsiblo to determino the cause of death. The body was well nourished, and there wero no ante-mortein marks of violence. A verdict was returned to tho effect that the causo of death v/as unknown. DUNEDIN, 23rd April. Wm. Peak, a labourer, 26 years of aye, died in Clydo Hospital last ni^ht as tho result of falling ott' a haystack on 20th April. Hia spine was fractured.

A somewhat romantic story of the proposed elopement of a young New Zealand girl has been unfolded hero (states our Sydney correspondent, under date 20th inst.). Tha girl, the daughter of a well-known New Zealand merchant, arrived by last boat with the intention of meeting her lover, who had come over by a previous boat, and gouig wilh him to Sau Fiaccißco, when they wero to be married. But instead of meeting her lover, she was met Ly two detectives, who look charge of her with the intention of ntnding her back to her home. Hei 4 father, appaienlly, kuew 01 the young couple's intention, for he had communicated with the police authorities here, giving a description of the girl and instructing that she be sent back to New Zealand. Th© girl is only 17 years of age. She stated thut her father objected to ths man 01 her thoice', und she had therefore determined to run away and get mairied. However, she will shortly be b^ck home again, unmarried.
