PETONE.

Mr. J. Piper gave his final address to electors at St. Augustine's Hall, Petone, last evening. There were about forty people present and Mr. D. Kier presided. Mr. Piper stated that there was considerable room for impro'vemtnt in the methods in vogue in dealing with tho work of the office. Touching on finance he held that in this direeton Petono compared ,very favourably with boroughs of equal 'size and age ; the more so, seeing that Petone ' .ad no aevenue-producing reserves, ana jfas saddled with, a largo urea of non-f jteable land. He claimed equal credit tvith tho Mayor for keeping down the expenditure, and he ga* ft instances of what he- had done tho this direction. As regards the espiaoacfi^ he was still in favour, as he a^ays lias been, of an improvement scheme., but to oairy out such a scheme it was, perhaps, unwise to transfer funds from the gas account. He would rather see thaC account put on a sound footing, suitable piovision being made for renewals and extensions. Petone wanted, an improved suburban train service and representations should be made to the department now, to that end. lie stood or strict, economy without impaired efficiency ; better methods and system of dealing with details and routine- work of the borough ; mting on unimproved values; day labour on aU borough jobsi wheie practicable; tqual attention to all parts of the borough, and equal consideration lor all M'rhoiib of tho community.
