SUBURBAN ELECTIONS

MIRAMAR The electors of Seatoun were addressed last night by Mr. H. N. M'Leod, in furtherance of his candidature for the Mayoralty of Miramar. There was a good attendance. The chair was taken by Councillor C. E. Bowie. Mr. M'Leod referred to the change that had taken place at Seatoun in the course of its development from the time when it was co vexed with manuka and tauhinu to the present, when by the combined efforts of residents and the council ii had become an attractive seaside resort. The work of the outgoing Mayor, Mr. John Brcdie, and of the other contestant for the post of Mayor, Councillor Richards, was favourably commented upon. Mr. M'Leod alluded to the many municipal activities in which he, with others, bore a share of in inaugurating. Ho outlined a strong policy of advance upon lines which had already been laid down, in increasing' the usefulness and comfort of trams, forming roads in outlying parts, and extending the street-lighting. The drainage and water service- and power schemes should be actively pushed to their conclusion. .Anything that would lead to further settlement of the district should be fostered by the council. His favourable attitude. to the local fire brigade, band, and similar activities was mentioned, as well as his efforts on behalf of football, hockey, and athletic bodies. A vote of thanks, moved by Mr. Clark and seconded by Mr. Eager, was carried. The carididaWfor the election' as councillors, "Messrs. Richards, a candidate for the Mayoralty, addressed a well attended' meeting at the Town Hall, Miramar, last mghfc. Councillor Bell was voted to the chair, and in introducing the speaker eulogised the good work done by him over a period of years. Although not an orator, Mr. Richards had proved that excellent service was possible. The candidate said that although ho considered a criticism of his opponent's published policy perfectly fair, he preferred to deal with public topics as from his- own point of view. He reviewed his pnbiic life, and claimed the consideration of electors, on polling-day. If elected ho promised lo give consideration to a benefit fund for workers, the extension, of lighting and other facilities. The finances of the borough were discussed on the same- lines as m his previous speeches. On the motion of Mr. Bere, seconded by» Mr. Bath, the candidate was accorded a hearty and unanimous' vote of thanks for his address. Messrs. A Grigg and J.G. Phillip, candidates for the vacancies on the council, also addressed the meeting.
