MIRAMAR AFFAIRS

RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WRECK

TO THE BDITOR. Sir, — Having listened to the pros and cons on matters relating to the advancement of this borough, I would just like to state a few ideas which have occurred to me on the same subject. Now, in common-sense, do you not think that in euch & ifchinly-populat-ed district, where the residents are necessarily cramped for funds for improvements, that the first great question to consider is, "encouragement of settlement in the borough"? Would not this be best achieved by doing away with that prohibitive second section and coupon system, which sirrely is a poor way oi inviting visitors, who, I consider, should be attracted rather than discouraged. By this means, many people who have already tried, say, Day s Bay and Lyall Bay, would come here and form a practical comparison, which would be favourable, I venture to predict, to our delightful little resort, and no doubt be the means of gaining many n«w residents. In this matter 1 entirely agree with Mr. Grigg. Now, to speak of tree-planting vefsus road-making t I cannot cay that in thte I agree in like manner with that same gentleman. On the face of it, Mr. Grigg's argument — i.e., road-making and lighting first — would appear the more practical arrangement of the two, but as a lamp-post can be brought to full maturity in half a day, a tree requiring many years to arrive at the same condition, and since evidently funds do not permit of the simultaneous carrying out of the two, it is quite plain that such a valuable policy as tree-planting cannot be wisely relegated to the dim future. 1, for one, in my lifetime should like to see tome of the beautifying results. I contend that if the above matters were attended to, also a little thought given to the improvement of the recreation grounds, the residents would follow as a. matter of course, and thus the burden of finance would fall more lightly on the individual. — I am, etc., SMALL PROPRIETRESS.

The first annual smoke concert of the Wellington College Old Boys' Swimming Club will be held at Godber'p, Cuba* street, to-morrow, aigh-t.

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST MR. ISMAY. A SPIRITED REPLY, FUTILITY OF " UNSINKABLE " VESSELS. FURTHER STORES OF THE DISASTER.

vßyv By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. NEW YORK, 22nd April. Wild reports are current, and are by excitable members of Congress, declaring that Mr. J. Brae© Ismay, managing director of the White Star Company, is responsible for the wreck. In these statements 'it is asserted that Mr. Ismay virtually superseded Captain Smith, and compelled him to. take an unusually high northern course and to maintain an excessive- speed. Referring to ? violent attack on Mr. Ismay by i Senator Isiuor Rayner, Senator P. J. M'Cumber, speakings in the Senate, protested against ' the trial, conviction, sentencing, and execution of Mr. Ismay without fair and honest consideration of all the circumstances of the case. When it felt that the civilised world, desired a victim, upon whom to vent its wrath .the Senate* should be particularly deliberate in its actions. Senator Lodge endorsed Mr. M'Cumber's remarks.
