CAPTAIN'S SUICIDE DENIED MEMORIAL SERVICES IN LONDON. MANSION HOUSE FUND RAPIDLY ■ INCREASING. LONDON, 20th AprU. Officials of the White Star Company now state that the total number of passengers and crew who perished in the Titanic is 1635, and 705 were saved. One hundred and forty of the latter have been sent to hospital. The earlier accounts of the suicide of Captain Smith and the chief engineer prove to have been unfounded, arising from statements made by a demented passenger. Mrs. George Widener, whose husband and son were drowned, states she saw Captain Smith jump from the bridge into the sea. A moment previously she saw another officer commit suicide by putting a bullet through his brain. The memorial service in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, on Friday, was attended by the Lord Mayor of London, members of the Cabinet, the foreign Ambassadors, representatives of the shipping companies, and 5000 other people. Sir William Hall-Jones, High Commissioner, represented New Zealand. A Roman Catholic service was held in Westminster Cathedral. Hundreds of people attended a special service on Friday in the Carnegie Hall, New York, in memory of Mr. W. T. Stead. The Mansion House fund in aid of women and children dependent on members of the Titanic's crew had reached £40,000 on Friday. The women's special appeal resulted in the collection of £7000, and the Southampton fund totalled £6200. The United States Congress has adjourned as a token of respect for the memory of those who went down in the Titanic. Subscriptions in Great Britain amount to £100,(500; and in New York to (Received April 22, 8.5 a.m.) LONDON, 21nt April. In numerous churches and chapels references were made to the disaster. The "Dead March" was played and dumb peals rung on the bells. SYDNEY, This Day. Pulpit references to the "Titanic disaster were made in all the leading churches yesterday.
