MISHAP TO CLAN OGILVY
RESULT Ofr FURTHER INVESTIGATION. On further investigation being made in port to-day, it transpires that the mishap to the Clan Ogilvy was more serious than at first stated. The shaft, was actually fractured, and the break, a diagonal one, is over 2ft in length. When the mishap occurred the engines were, of course, stopped immediately, but the propeller necessarily could not be stopped once the shaft was broken through. This fact was responsible for the damage done to the bearings, and for this reason : when the propeller revolved it took round with it the after portion of the shaft. The slanting break on this ground against the other half, and lifted almost a footout of the straight. Inevitably, the bearings were shorn off, and the only on© on the rear half of the shaft that remained intact was the aftermost tailshaft bearing. Repairs will necessitate a complete new intermediate shaft, and it is not yet known how' long the process will take.
