FIFTH OFFICER'S HEROISM MEANS OP RESCUING MANY LIVES. HOW THE " COLLAPSIBLES " WERE SAVED. When the Titanic plunged many persona jumped overboard, but some were rescued by the boats. A number embarked in the collapsible boats, which the lifeboate subsequently picked up. A passenger describes the fifth officer (Lowe) as saving many lives, by his warnings to people not to jump and swamp the boats. When his collapsible was launched the officer hoisted a mast and sail, and collected the other collapsibles, and arranged an. adequate crew for each. He connected them by lines, all moving together. The officer later returned to the wreck, and saved a collapsible containing thirty people, all scantily clad, and on the point of sinking.
