"TELEGRAPH FRAUD " CHARGES

ACCUSED SENT FOE TEIAL. BLENHEIM, 12th April. What are known sis "the telegraph fraud" charges concluded at the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Edmund John Walsh and John Vcrnon Binloy weie charged with conspiracy to defraud Scott and M'artindale and Rose and Bradshaw by means of racing telegrams alleged to have been altered by Binley before trans mission, he behig the official at the telegraph office. Also two charges of attempting to' obtain money from the firms mentioned by falso pietences. Accused were committed for trial at the next Supreme Court sittings at Blenheim, counsel admitting the- evidenca in the latter charges as being the same as in the conspiracy charge. On a further charge of obtaining from Scott and Martindale certain moneys by means of false pretence with intent to defraud againct Binley only, counsel would not admit the evidence, and Inepoctor Ellison adduced evidence in support of the charge* Walsh, when put in the box, declined to give evidence on counsel's advice on the ground that it might incriminate him. The Magistrate said it waa for the Court to say if it would protect witness or compel him to give evidence." The case v.-ac adjourned till next day.
